NivoCap Capacitance level transmitter. General The NivoCap level transmitters are devices designed to measure the level in vessels filled with conductive or non-conductive liquids, powders and granular materials. With capacitance level metering, one "plate" of a capacitor is represented by the probe (insulated with conductive mediums, non-insulated with non-conductive mediums). The other "plate" is formed by the metallic wall of the containing vessel or by an auxiliary probe. Auxiliary probes can take the form of either a concentric pipe around the probe, or a rod close to and parallel to the probe. The dielectric of the capacitor consists of either the medium itself (if non-conductive) or by insulation on the probe when measuring a conductive medium. Level changes in the medium may be correlated with changes in capacitance of this "capacitor" and these changes are transformed into a 4 to 20 mA analog signal by the electronics in the probe head. Application Best suited for measurement of conductive liquids in regularly shaped conductive containers, capacitance level transmitters are also quite effective for measuring non-conductive materials (liquids and free flowing solids) and, through the use of an auxiliary probe, in irregular or non-conductive vessels. The probe in the vessel must be continuously in contact with the medium to be measured. Erroneous level indications will be given if arching occurs or cavities form in the medium around the probe.
